School Closure Update 22nd May 2020
Fri 22 May 2020Bishop’s Primary Academy
Date: Thursday 21st May 2020
Unfortunately, the school is closed to most children.
Government advice remains that: ‘every child who can be cared for at home should be.’
Unfortunately, we will not be opening the school on June 1st for children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. We aim to open to these year groups at the earliest date we feel that it is safe to do so.
We will continue to offer provision for critical workers’ children and vulnerable children.
We aim to invite more children back to school at the earliest date. Despite staff working hard to prepare for 1st June there are still significant uncertainties at national and government level. Until these are resolved it is difficult for us to implement our plans.
We will continue to communicate with you on a daily message and support home learning. We will share with you a date for opening more classes as soon as this is safely possible.
Half term
Next week would normally be the half term break and we suggest that families treat the week as a break. New home learning packs will be available in the school entrance from 1st June. As with any school holiday we still encourage you to read with your children and encourage them to practise their counting and multiplication tables. These basic skills will be so important when they eventually come back to school and we work with you to help them catch up.
Please continue to follow government advice and ensure that you observe social distancing at all times.
Key workers
The school is currently required to offer provision for children of critical workers. With some workers beginning to return to work there will be an increase in the number of children attending these sessions. Please ensure that you email the school office@bishop.norfolk.sch.uk if you need your child to attend school. A member of staff will contact you to confirm arrangements before your child attends school. We will need to see evidence of your employment before a place can be confirmed. A list of critical workers can be found at:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-maintaining-educational-provision/guidance-for-schools-colleges-and-local-authorities-on-maintaining-educational-provision
We need to follow this process so that we can meet safety requirements for children and adults in school.
Home learning
We do understand how difficult it is to support home learning. We hope these materials help but we only ask families to do their best with their children. Sometimes taking a break is really important. You can always return to learning activities later in the day.
It is also helpful to practise basic skills such as:
• Maths – counting and/or multiplication tables
• A reading activity with an adult or older brother or sister
• Practising spelling or phonics
• A short writing activity
• A physical activity
These can be done in a variety of ways – sometimes without the children even noticing!!
There remain a huge amount or really useful and enjoyable resources available on the internet. These can also be used at any stage. We think the following are particularly helpful:

Please contact the school to book places. office@bishop.norfolk.sch.uk

School Closure Update 21st May 2020
Thu 21 May 2020Bishop’s Primary Academy Date: Thursday 21st May 2020
Unfortunately, the school is closed to most children.
Government advice remains that: ‘every child who can be cared for at home should be.’
Possible extension of opening to more children
Thank your for responding to both the survey and telephone calls from staff as we try and find out how many children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 might return to school. This is helping us plan and finalise our risk assessments.
We have decided that we will not be offering Nursery places from 1st June and will review this later in the month.
A decision on how many year groups we will offer places to will be communicated by tomorrow afternoon. We apologise for the uncertainty but we need to ensure that we can make the premises and organisation safe for children and staff.

Home learning packs
Most families collected learning packs last week. These were for two weeks so there will not be any new learning packs until 1st June.
We still have copies of the current learning packs in the entrance to the school.
Teachers will be contacting some families over the coming days to check how you are finding the home learning. This is to offer a support and hear your views. We fully appreciate how hard it is to become teachers for your own families!
Teachers will send Dojo messages each day to remind you of the tasks for that day. Please try and post examples of your child’s learning on Dojo each day.
The packs should be collected during your daily exercise. Please ensure that you respect social distancing. There will be cones showing where to wait if there is a queue. There should only be one person in the entrance at any time.

Extending provision to Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 children
We are working hard to confirm our arrangements for more children to return to school. You will be aware that there is not an agreement between the government and unions so guidance and expectations have been updated throughout last week.
It appears that when arrangements are confirmed children will spend the day in groups of no more than 15. They will be based in one classroom through the day and will have outside breaks with the same group of 15 children. Start and end of day times may be different for different year groups.
There are a wide range of other measures that need to be considered and the government guidance can be found at:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/preparing-for-the-wider-opening-of-schools-from-1-june
It would be helpful to understand how mums, dads and carers feel about their children returning to school. We ask families with children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 to complete the following survey:

We have created a short video to for the children to remind them that we are missing them and look forward to seeing them back in school. We hope you all enjoy it!
Home learning packs
Teachers will be contacting some families over the coming days to check how you are finding the home learning. This is to offer a support and hear your views. We fully appreciate how hard it is to become teachers for your own families!
Home learning packs are available in the entrance to the school. These packs provide work until the half term break which starts on Friday 22nd May.

Just One Norfolk have asked us to share the following message:
We want you to know that we are still here for you. These are unusual times for families, we are all facing increased stress or have things crop up that we don’t know how to deal with. Just One Norfolk has support and advice for Norfolk families so if you need us, contact us on 0300 300 0123 or http://www.justonenorfolk.nhs.uk #We're Still Here.
